The 1,500-plus HP Club in Project CARS 3: ICE!
Once upon a time, a car with over a ton of horsepower was consigned strictly to elite levels of motorsport. Think the CanAm Porsche 917/10 (around 1,100hp and weighing 750KGs) or the Lotus 98T (a ton of power and weighing around 550KGs). These cars were solely made for track work and, without any aids, capable of being tamed only by the best and bravest driving talents of the day. Both are in Project CARS 3, by the way, if you’re brave enough to want to give them a go.
But with the advent of modern driving aids, contemporary tyres, and hybrid tech’ (and now full electric power), the days of 1,500hp road cars that are equally at home at the shopping centre on Saturday morning and the Nürburgring on Sunday afternoon has arrived.
In Project CARS 3, you can sample four of the most extraordinary examples of this new breed of hypercar (or are they megacars?). Two are full electric, and two sport internal combustion engines (ICE).
This week we look at the ICE 1,500hp club.
Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+
In August of 2019 Bugatti set a new speed record for pre-series prototypes—304.773mph (490.484kmh). Never before has a vehicle by a series-production manufacturer reached such high speeds.
“Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark. We have now achieved this,” was how Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann was quoted as saying.
That done, Bugatti went on to create the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300 + that now comes to Project CARS 3.
The Bugatti Chiron Sport 300 + has power upped to the mythical 1,600hp mark courtesy of an absolutely stonking 8L V16 quad-turbo that powers all four wheels.
The Chiron Super Sport 300+ is visually distinct from the Chiron as well, not least due to its extended and aerodynamically optimised body, which is designed for extremely high-speed travel beyond 420kmh.
You won’t understand until you get this car onto the track. Unthinkable levels of performance, and waiting for you in Project CARS 3.
The ultimate road-going track weapon? The stats here are astonishing: 5.0 litre twin-turbo V8 pushing 1,600hp—yes, this is one of the most powerful production engine ever created, featuring an inhouse design- and- built Light Speed Transmission and the lightest V8 crankshaft ever produced—with over a ton of downforce, active rear-wheel steering, and a carbon fibre monocoque.
Handling is optimised via the active rear-wheel steering that increases responsiveness. The steering system considers factors such as speed, throttle, brake positions, steering and slip angles (among others) and is capable of turning the rear wheels up to three-degrees in either direction for quicker cornering and increased stability.
At its essence, the rear-wheels counter-steer at low speed for a tighter turning circle while, at high-speed, the rear-wheels work in synch’ with the front to deliver a car that is stunningly poised for track-work. The addition of its massive boomerang rear wing offers big downforce befitting a car with big power. Combined with a newly designed front splitter and rear diffuser, this makes for an active and incredible aerodynamic package that is in a class of its own. The Jesko is truly a showcase of fast cornering and brilliant manoeuvrability with incredible grip and steering. Get a taste of its blistering track experience in Project CARS 3.
